We have selected some of the best multi-day hikes in Australia where you could bring your favourite Aarn Packs! Australia is not just about surfing and pretty beaches. There are some incredible hiking tracks all around the country. From alpine views to desert sceneries, and even some tropical vibes.
Get ready to pack your tramping pack for new adventures!
The Overland Track is a 65km trail in Tasmania. The hike can be completed in 6 days. While it can be done all year round, the best season to do it is between January and March, as there is usually less rain. This stunning and challenging alpine hike will take you through lakes, valleys carved by glaciers, alpine meadows and ancient rainforests. Most people start at Cradle Mountain and end at Lake St Clair.
The track is a mix of boardwalk and trails - lots of mud and tree roots to expect. There is an optional side trip bringing you to the highest peak of Tasmania, Mt Ossa (1617m).
Booking is compulsory between October and May - it is very popular, so get in quick! You can find more information on the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service website.
The Larapinta Trail is a 221km hike through the Australian outback. It should take you at least 12 days to complete it. It is a spectacular and demanding trek where you can expect deep gorges, rocky tracks, infinite shades of red, narrow ridges, lots of riverbed walking and incredible flora and fauna.
Even though you will be walking in the middle of a desert, you will find plenty of waterholes to refresh yourself!The best season to hike it is from May to October when temperatures are cooler.
The Cape to Cape is a 135km track following the coastline between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin. It can be completed in 5 to 7 days, or you can just hike some sections of it as day walks. Autumn and Spring offer the best weather conditions to hike the trails, and it is also the seasons when you can spot migrating whales!
You'll enjoy sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, beaches, cliff-tops and ancient rock formations and forests.
The Thorsborne Track is a 32km long trail that can be completed in 4 days. Best season to go is between April and September, the cooler and drier season.
You'll need to embark on a ferry to reach the trailhead, and the same on the way back! Once there, you will be greeted by luxuriant rain forest, sandy beaches, eucalyptus forest and some creeks to cool down.
Don't be fooled by its tropical vibe, this is still a physically demanding hike, with lots of up and down, in a hot and humid environment.
The Six Foot Track is a 44km, 3-day hike at the northern end of the Blue Mountains. It is a great option for a first multi-day trip! It has well-maintained tracks, but some steep and challenging sections.
The track takes you around eucalyptus forests, farmland and impressive rock formations. There are campsites along the way, or you could also treat yourself and spend the first night at the eco-lodge situated next to the Coxs River, not far from the trail.
The Aussie 10 is not an official track, but it is worth mentioning as it links the 10 highest peaks in the country, including Mt Kosziusko at 2228m. It is a 44km alpine route which is usually completed in 2-3 days. This loop follows the Main Range track and includes some detours to bag all the peaks along the way.
You'll be rewarded with stunning alpine views all along the way! It can be done all year round; however, snow is likely to be present in winter, and the summer months can get quite hot!
The South Coast Track is an 84km hike that can be completed in 6 to 8 days. It is a challenging track that should only be attempted by experienced hikers. There are several creeks and river crossings along the way.
Expect stunning ocean views, dramatic coastline, temperate rainforest and mud! Best season to hike it is between mid-November and late-March when the weather is more clement. However, it follows the line of the southernmost coast of Australia, so you can expect wild weather at any time of the year!
